8th edition: A New Beginning and a Fresh Start

Wow... I have been wildly neglectful with this blog since its inception, but that's going to change here and now.

Rather than bore you with that story, I'll just mention that its available on Conventional Cognizance, my parent blog.

Moving on...

As any good Warhammer gamer knows, Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition has been released. While I still have plenty of trepidation about the new system (and indeed, still prefer 7th), I can't help but try to move forward. Hopefully, those things that do excite me about the new edition will help me to embrace it fully.

So what is it that excites me most?

The new terrain system, and the chance to overhaul my armies in a unique new way.

Terrain first. The new rulebook, with is massive in and of itself, contains a fantastic section on fantastical terrain. This bothers some people; I've seen a lot of complaints about people wanting to bring nothing but special terrain that will benefit their game. Me? I love the new terrain rules, and I use the random generation chart to decide what hits the table. Sometimes I have the old style games of woods, hills, and buildings. Sometimes I have wacky games with an Anvil of Vaul hanging out next to a Sphinx, which is hugging a Temple of Skulls. Most of the time, the chart just adds a nice variety to the scenery mix.

So I've decided to embrace the terrain system fully and am endeavoring to come up with a representative model for EVERY TERRAIN PIECE IN THE BOOK.

Crazy? Probably.

Crazy fun? Definitely.

I found this bad boy at Michael's while I was out with Bree. He was sitting on a Halloween decoration shelf and ran $1.99. I picked him up, primed him, and now he's just waiting for a coat of paint. I'll keep you all posted.

The second most exciting part about 8th to me is army reconstruction. With a new set of rules, I can make my forces try out different setups to see what I like. I won't spend much time on this topic today... there's too much I haven't tried out yet, so my opinions on the issue will be incomplete (at best).

Instead, I'll share my Mark VIII Empire list (that is to say, the 8th different list I'm trying in 8th) so you can get an idea about what I'm up to.

Without... well, any adieu...

Expect more detail about everything as we move forward. CritiMinis is back, it's going to stay this time, and you can hold me to that.
