The List

I may have mentioned it somewhere else, but I'd eventually like to gather up a full set of 8th edition terrain. At least one (preferably 2+) of every piece of scenery that can be found in the 8th edition rulebook.

Why?

Because there are a lot of wacky rules surrounding terrain these days, and I'd like to have an impressive collection so I can eventually cover every eventuality.

So I figured I'd spend today's post creating a list of the 8th edition terrain, both to help myself and anyone else undergoing this daunting endeavour. I know its printed in the rulebook, but a list that can be copied and pasted and printed and highlighted and et cetera can only be a good thing.

Anything in red is something I've already prepared for myself.

Enjoy!

This Old Battlefield: Sinister Statue

As I mentioned previously, I picked up this bad boy at the local Michael's Craft Store earlier this week.

Photobucket

For only $1.99, I couldn't really pass this up as a possible terrain piece for my gaming table. Lately, I've been trying to commit an hour a day to model related whatnots, be it painting, modelling, or terrain. So I set aside an hour block for the statue, gave it a simple but striking paint job, and I was set.

I started with a Dark Angels Green base. A flat cover over the statue.

Photobucket

Then, I drybrushing a layer of Adeptus Battlegray.

Photobucket

Same idea, this time with Codex and Fortress Gray.

Photobucket

The basic statue is done now. On the the eyes. First, a sloppy drybruch of Scab Red. Then smaller area brushes of Blood Red, Blazing Orange, and Golden Yellow.

Photobucket

And then boom... all done.

Photobucket

Piece of cake, right?

By the way, it only took about 15 minutes of my allotted hour's worth of time. All in all, I think I'm in a good way here. Hope I can find some more nice terrain-y bargains at stores in the future.

Back to painting! Until next time!

Why Internet Forums Might Be Hurting the Hobby More than Helping

I like the Internet.

I like Warhammer.

I like forums.

It would stand to reason that I would like forums on the Internet about Warhammer, right?

And I do... hell, I run a forum: The Warhammer Realm

Forums can be a great place to have questions answered, to get perspectives on gaming from hundreds (or thousands) of fellow players across the globe, to see beautiful paint jobs and conversions from all around the world, and serve a dozen other purposes.

But it turns out that I also hate what Internet Forums can do to the hobby. The following posts from a prominent Warhammer Forum should illustrate my point:
Post 1, Post 2, Post 3.

If you didn't read them, Post 1 encourages the use of sneaky "tactics" (for lack of a better word) to throw your opponent off guard. None are technically against the rules of the game, but they don't exactly support any idea of sportsmanship that I'm familiar with. You don't see NFL teams putting bouncers that aren't on the roster in team uniforms to trick the other coach into thinking they'll be going in to block kicks. Sneaky play in game is tactical (like a Play Action Pass or a Punt Fake)... trying to imply to your opponent that you have more than you're allowed to is just underhanded and poor play.

Post 2 to me screams fighting poor sportsmanship with poor sportsmanship. The vast majority of posters aren't recognizing that sometimes people actually make mistakes. Instead, most people like to think everyone is a cheater at heart. Then they actually suggest going so far as walking away from opponents, or only agreeing to play them with a handicap imposed.

Is sportsmanship really so dead that people won't just stop and say, "Hey... you're really supposed to pick your Magic Lore when you build your list. It's not really cool with me that you didn't. I showed you the respect of building a list that obided with the rules, and I'd appreciate if you did the same next time."

Treat people with respect and most with respond with something along the lines of, "Hey - sorry about that. I'll try to do better next time."

People aren't inherently bad, and a little respect will lead us to less ill will and more people saying, "Now that we got that out of the way, let's roll some dice!"

Post 3 takes a game that's not even 2 months old yet and opens up a unique can of worms: tournament restrictions. The game isn't even 2 months old yet... and just because you run an event you're going to tell me how I'm allowed to play my game? I'm not a cheesey gamer. I don't min/max my lists. Yet I still feel almost violated by other players trying to lord over the game that I love. To me, that's like parents deciding to take the right of choice from their children by indoctrinating them into behaviors and beliefs before they're old enough to even understand what's going on around them. Disgusting.

If you're an Internet Forum-ite, more power to you. Like I said, forums are great. Just try not to forget the fundamentals... sportsmanship, fair play, and just a pinch of level-headed rationality.

It's not that hard to be the bigger gamer.

Think about it.

8th edition: A New Beginning and a Fresh Start

Wow... I have been wildly neglectful with this blog since its inception, but that's going to change here and now.

Rather than bore you with that story, I'll just mention that its available on Conventional Cognizance, my parent blog.

Moving on...

As any good Warhammer gamer knows, Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition has been released. While I still have plenty of trepidation about the new system (and indeed, still prefer 7th), I can't help but try to move forward. Hopefully, those things that do excite me about the new edition will help me to embrace it fully.

So what is it that excites me most?

The new terrain system, and the chance to overhaul my armies in a unique new way.

Terrain first. The new rulebook, with is massive in and of itself, contains a fantastic section on fantastical terrain. This bothers some people; I've seen a lot of complaints about people wanting to bring nothing but special terrain that will benefit their game. Me? I love the new terrain rules, and I use the random generation chart to decide what hits the table. Sometimes I have the old style games of woods, hills, and buildings. Sometimes I have wacky games with an Anvil of Vaul hanging out next to a Sphinx, which is hugging a Temple of Skulls. Most of the time, the chart just adds a nice variety to the scenery mix.

So I've decided to embrace the terrain system fully and am endeavoring to come up with a representative model for EVERY TERRAIN PIECE IN THE BOOK.

Crazy? Probably.

Crazy fun? Definitely.

My first piece: a Sinister Statue

Photobucket

I found this bad boy at Michael's while I was out with Bree. He was sitting on a Halloween decoration shelf and ran $1.99. I picked him up, primed him, and now he's just waiting for a coat of paint. I'll keep you all posted.

The second most exciting part about 8th to me is army reconstruction. With a new set of rules, I can make my forces try out different setups to see what I like. I won't spend much time on this topic today... there's too much I haven't tried out yet, so my opinions on the issue will be incomplete (at best).

Instead, I'll share my Mark VIII Empire list (that is to say, the 8th different list I'm trying in 8th) so you can get an idea about what I'm up to.

Without... well, any adieu...
